First pass pages.
I received my first pass pages on Tuesday.  I let Dwayne read the acknowledgments for the first time and I cried a little and he cried a little and then we went out to dinner because what else were we going to do on First Pass Page Day?

For those of you who don't know, the pass pages are unbound, but they show exactly what the printing will look like on the pages of the final book.  I've been reading books for all but the first four years of my life (and even then I was always looking at picture books), but it never occurred to me that so much work went into this.  Books actually have interior designers!   Who knew?

So one really fun thing the designer did for FREEFALL is have the time stamps for the start of each new scene in Seth's handwriting.  (Or, at least, I think it's supposed to be Seth's since it isn't mine!)  See?  See?

Also, the running heads (that's my name and the title, I've learned) are on the sides of the pages as are the page numbers.  Like so:

(This doesn't look quite right since I took the pictures at different distances.  But in real life, the text is the same size on both pages and the running heads match up exactly.)

And the best part of all is that it's set up so that the running heads are printed near the top of the page at the beginning, but gradually move down so that when you get to the end of the book, they are near the bottom of the page.  So if you flip the pages quickly from the start to the end (you know, like those little flip books where you can make stick-figure drawings into live-action stick-figure drawings?), you can watch the title as it FALLS DOWN the page!

My job for this part of the process is to read through everything on the pass pages and look for errors.  (And Pulse will have a proofreader doing the same.)  So it isn't all fun and games here.  But it's still pretty exciting!

that is one well-designed book! It's October, right? I must remember to grab a copy!

(also, I know it was happy-crying, but I had this flash of imagining the acknowledgements were just brutal and spiteful, and that's what was causing all the tears. I'm better now)

LOL. I only write those kind of acknowledgments in my head!

Actually, last night, Dwayne and I were having a conversation about backhanded acknowledgments I could write. We had way too much fun with that.
Mindi Scottmindiscott on March 25th, 2010 07:18 pm (UTC)
Yes, October 5th! I don't think you have to worry about forgetting. As long as we see each other around on LJ, FB, and such, I'm sure I'll be posting plenty of book statuses to keep it fresh in your mind. :-D
god of procrastinationhuman_loser on March 25th, 2010 07:22 pm (UTC)
Oh don't count on it. I'm a ninja of forgetting. I learned from the best. Whoever THAT was!
Mindi Scottmindiscott on March 25th, 2010 07:27 pm (UTC)
Ha! Well, you can always pre-order it. Then it will show up in October and you'll be like, "WTF? When did I order this?"

It is available for you from Amazon.ca now. Chapters, too. (That's a Canada store, yes?) So those are good options. Unless, of course, you hate those guys! :-D
god of procrastinationhuman_loser on March 25th, 2010 07:35 pm (UTC)
I HATE EVERYONE!

America doesn't have Chapters? I totally thought that was an American thing. Do you have Indigo? Maybe Chapters is the Canadian arm of Indigo? I don't even know what's American or Canadian anymore. I've been confused since I found out the truth about Boston Pizza.

Pre-ordering never occurred to me. I'm faintly ashamed of that, considering how much of my life is spent in front of a computer.

No chapters or indigo in USA. We ahve Borders, Barnes & Noble, and books-a-million. Among others.
Annikanoirbettie on March 25th, 2010 07:47 pm (UTC)
I'm not positive, but I think Chapters is what Borders (or maybe B&N) is called in Canadia.
god of procrastinationhuman_loser on March 25th, 2010 08:10 pm (UTC)
According to my exhaustive research, it's not associated with Borders or B&N, but was founded in Toronto in 1995. Though it was certainly modeled after those big box bookstores.

Love it, Mindi!

And what a cool idea with the headers falling down!
Mindi Scottmindiscott on March 25th, 2010 07:30 pm (UTC)
Thanks, Denise!

I don't know if I would have realized it except that my editor said she couldn't wait for me to see what the designer had done. I was checking it over and Dwayne pointed out that the title moved around on the pages. That's when I flipped through and saw the live-action! :-D

Ooh, I really like the running headers! Running...sides? Whatever. Neat idea! I work for a university press, and I've become kind of fascinated by the interior design of books now.
Mindi Scottmindiscott on March 25th, 2010 07:32 pm (UTC)
I swear, I've rarely noticed the interior of a book. Now, of course, I'll be checking for that all the time. It's just like how I never used to read acknowledgments pages, but now they are the first thing I look for!

FPPs areone of my FAVORITE parts of the editing process. The little surprises the designer/typesetter did are SO COOL

and how totally inventive to make it "freefall" down the page! LOVE IT!
Mindi Scottmindiscott on March 25th, 2010 10:55 pm (UTC)
It is really a fun part of the process. I had no idea!
Annikanoirbettie on March 25th, 2010 07:48 pm (UTC)
I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! It is the best-looking book I've seen since DANI NOIR.

Thank you! :-)

Yee! I really like it. I think it goes very well with the cover, which I have already deemed awesome. And the flip-book/falling title thing? I can't even.

PS - I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I plan to get my copy by going around to local bookstores and conspicuously asking the customer service if they carry "Freefall" by Mindi Scott. ;)
Mindi Scottmindiscott on March 25th, 2010 10:57 pm (UTC)
I know! I mean, how many people get to have flip-books in their books???? Is there anything cooler?

You hadn't mentioned it, but I like that plan very much. :-) I hope they do have it. *bites nails*
